Yesterday I was too busy relaxing to do my usual preview of the upcoming action and my review of what went before it so here is a small review of what we failed to analyse. On Saturday, we saw Argentina scrape past Iran in more than unconvincing style with their late winner coming at the hands of the genius Leo Messi who scored another spectacular goal to seal his side’s qualification but it was hard justice on an Iran team who more than matched their fancied opponents and should have scored on at least 2 occasions while also having a pretty good shout for a penalty denied. If the Argentina game was a disappointment then the action that followed with Germany and Ghana was anything but as the Ghanaians improved hugely on their opening defeat to register a fine 2.2 draw having lead midway through the second half. It was that man Miroslav Klose who found the net to take a share of the spoils in a game that was rich in excitement and drama and proved a fine choice for a Saturday night at home. Finally the action was rounded off in highly frustrating fashion as Bosnia slumped out of the competition following a narrow yet deserved 1.0 loss to Nigeria however had Edin Dzeko’s first half strike not been wrong ruled out for offside, it could and probably would have been an entirely different outcome. No doubt this was my biggest disappointment of the tournament so far as my hotly tipped Bosnian’s failed to live up to their qualification standards and Nigeria largely controlled a rather poor game. Sunday produced some more fantastic action but certainly not in that first game between Belgium and Russia which was decided by a late Belgian goal and while this was a result I needed for my group betting acca, it was a poor game and will be quickly forgotten by those unfortunate enough to be in attendance. Algeria and South Korea served up a 6 goal thriller with the Algerian’s surprising most (not Bo) with their win and this looks likely to send the Korean’s to the bottom of the group for the remained of the tournament which is just where I want them. I have a small acca on Honduras, Greece, South Korea and Iran all finishing bottom of their groups and this bet has a fine chance with 3 of the 4 bottom going into the last day. It looks like the Iran v Bosnia match will decide that one. Finally last night, I got my 2.2 prediction for the US and Portugal clash spot on (suppose you will have to trust me on that) and this was one of the more enjoyable games of the tournament with the US again proving dogged opponents and it took at 95th minute equaliser from Varela to rescue Portugal who still seem doomed to an early exit. My teams to win their group acca of Germany, Argentina, Belgium, France and Brazil is looking almost certain at this point and barring a major surprise, we will be looking at a fine 10/1 winner. Overall it was a decent weekend for the bets and at least 3 of the games were terrific value as this World Cup continues to defy expectations and is shaping up as one of the most special in the competitions history. Long may it continue. Preview of today’s action to follow. Comments are closed.
