Today’s action in what is fast becoming one of the best World Cup’s in memory see’s three vital games as Colombia take on Ivory Coast at 6pm followed by a huge match involving England and Uruguay with the action rounded off at midnight by Japan and a lacklustre Greek outfit.
4 of the 6 team’s today began their tournament with a defeat so it is fair to assume that there should be some serious drama with all of the teams involved in 2nd and 3rd games facing possible elimination. First off, Colombia will look to seal qualification against Ivory Coast in what should be an entertaining clash of styles and culture as both sides have the opportunity to take a 2nd win and seal their place in the last 16. I was very impressed with the Colombians in their 3.0 win over Greece and in James Rodriguez they have one of the potential stars of this tournament and his presence should ensure the Colombians have control on an opponent who while recording a victory in their opening fixture with Japan, flattered to deceive and were perhaps fortunate to emerge with 3 points. I expect the Colombians to win today but there is certainly the potential for BTTS at 8/11 odds. Colombia can be backed at 11/10 to win and that is exactly what I will be doing. The Ivorians have an aging team and while they do possess a decent threat going forward, I was not left overly impressed with them against Japan (admittedly I did fall asleep at halftime!) and I do not expect them to get anything more than a point from this game at the most but even that should prove beyond them. I will post a separate preview of the crunch England match and following on from the action in Sao Paulo will be Japan taking on Greece with both sides knowing nothing less than a win will do as they look to bounce back from opening day defeats. Japan are a great little team to watch and I feel they will have more than enough to see off an ordinary Greece side who looked so limp in their defeat by Colombia. Japan are 6/4 to win and this seems like an excellent price given the lack of quality available to the Greeks who never perform on the big stage (Euro 2004 aside..Ok they really DID perform then) and I expect them to go home without so much as a point from this group although they might sneak a goal tonight against a Japanese team who do not tend to focus too much on defence.
