Tuesday December 10th - Champions League Preview
The Champions League returns on Tuesday and Wednesday with the final round of matches set to determine the final 8 qualification places still up for grabs. Liverpool gets the action off and running in one of two early kick-offs (Napoli vs Genk being the other) as they head to Salzburg for a make or break contest with the Austrian beverage giants, Red Bull. The hosts need a win to eliminate the reigning UCL champions and while that might prove a bridge too far, goals certainly look to be the order of the day given both sides records in this seasons competition so far. A whopping 47 goals have been scored in these two sides 10 CL fixtures so far this season and with their first meeting finishing as a 4.3 home win for the Mersey giants, the return contest seems certain to produce more goals with the host side needing a win to progress at the expense of the Premier League leaders. BTTS and over 2.5 goals looks nailed on here @4/7 while over 3.5 goals looks to have a good shot as well at 11/10. While a Liverpool win at ⅘ is expected, it is worth noting that a point will be enough for the visitors. Still, given the goal records on show, this contest should prove an explosive one. Elsewhere, similar outcomes should be expected in the Group G contests between another Red Bull monster as RBL Leipzig travel to Lyon who will need to match Zenit´s result in their match with Benfica if they are to progress to the last 16. RBL have seen BTTS and over 2.5 goals in each of their last 5 fixtures (and in 8 of their last 10) and still need a point to secure top place in the group. For Lyon, a win could yet see them actually win the group while a loss could see them eliminated from European competition entirely. As such, @bobreaksbookies expects a keenly fought contest with goals at both end pretty likely. Goals also look to be in the cards in the other contest in Group G with bottom of the table Benfica needing a win coupled with a Lyon loss to continue their European adventures in 2020 in the Europa League. With Zenit needing to match Lyon´s result in order to reach the CL round of 16, we should see another decent contest with BTTS looking quite likely. In Amsterdam, Ajax and Valencia face-off with both sides still looking for a positive result to ensure their path to the round of 16. For the hosts, a point will be enough (or a Chelsea failure to beat Lille in the group´s other fixture) while Valencia needs a win to secure their passage into the knockout phase of this seasons competition. Goals have to be expected with the visitors seeing BTTS in 11 of their last 12 matches (all comps) with each of their last 4 away fixtures also going over 2.5 goals. Given Ajax´s home form, another entertaining contest is expected Elsewhere, Inter should see-off a weakened Barcelona side at the San Siro as they look to secure their passage to the knockout phase at the expense of Dortmund who won´t have it all their own way against a stubborn Slavia Prague side. Still, with Inter as short as ½, value is certainly in short supply. For today´s selections, I have also included 3 fixtures from tomorrow night´s action with plenty of goals expected in the fixtures from Ukraine, Croatia and Germany. I´m pretty confident about all of my top 6 selections here and have opted for a slightly bolder BTTS treble with two of those selections looking highly likely to go over 2.5 goals. If you want to play it a bit safer, the BTTS treble pays a little less at 2.5/1.
